Making the most of California Avocado season!

California Avocados are grown on nearly 5,000 family farms in the coastal regions of California – spanning from San Luis Obispo County down through San Diego County, where the climates are mild and the soil is rich. Locally grown California Avocados are in season from early spring through late fall and right now are peak availability here at Mollie Stone’s.

The California Avocado is creamy, nutty superfood, and is naturally nutritious with nearly 20 vitamins and nutrients. Their nutrient-dense profile makes them a smart addition to your diet, providing both good fats (mono- and poly- unsaturated) and dietary fiber (which does not raise blood sugar levels), and they are naturally sodium and cholesterol free! (Get more avocado nutrition facts.) The avocado is also a versatile piece of fruit, and makes its way into every kind of meal, snack , or even dessert.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE PERFECT AVOCADO?

When choosing your avocados in our stores, identify when you will be using the avocado. Tonight? In three days? If tonight or the same day, choose ripe avocados by looking for an avocado that is darker in color, and will yield to gentle squeezing in the palm of your hand. If in three or more days, choose an avocado that is on the firmer side when squeezed gently in the palm of your hand. If you have ripe avocados that are ready to eat but you are not ready for them, place them in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process. (Read more choosing avocado tips.)

Did you know that by peeling your avocados, not only does it allow you to make the most of  this delicious fruit, but it can also help you get the nutritional benefits of the dark green layer of fruit closest to the peel! The dark green layer has the greatest concentration of beneficial nutrients. Here’s how to peel an avocado:
