Recipe: Stars & Stripes Cake

Looking for a fun dessert for your 4th of July celebration? Our Stars & Stripes Cake is both patriotic and delicious, and kids love to help prepare it.

The base is any 9” x 13” cake, which means that you can use a mix or whip up your favorite family recipe. We’re planning to make a yellow cake this year, but vanilla, chocolate or any other would be equally delicious because the frosting is a simple, slightly-sweetened whipped cream.

Topped with carefully arranged ripe berries, this cake is sure to be a hit. Ready for some fireworks? Keep reading for the how-to!

STARS & STRIPES CAKE
A Mollie Stone’s Markets Original Recipe
Makes a 9” x 13” cake

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cake, any flavor, baked in a 9” x 13” pan from a mix or your favorite recipe
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 1 pint strawberries or raspberries

DIRECTIONS

Bake cake according to recipe or mix instructions. Allow to cool to room temperature.

Freeze the bowl of a stand mixer and the whisk attachment for 10-15 minutes. Once chilled, set up the stand mixer and add the sugar and heavy cream to the bowl. Beat on medium-high speed just until the cream forms stiff peaks. Frost cake.

Wash and dry berries. If using strawberries, remove the stem and slice vertically. Arrange blueberries in a rectangle in the top left corner of the cake. Then, make horizontal stripes using the strawberries or raspberries.

Store any leftover cake in the refrigerator.
