Why is this important to Mollie Stone’s and to the Bay Area?
There are many important causes to support this time of year, but if you have ever been to Mollie Stone’s then you are familiar with our passion for wholesome food. Hunger not only manifests itself as a consistent lack of enough food and fewer meals each day, but also relying on poor-quality food that is high in calories but absent of nutrients.
Our local food banks – the San Francisco & Marin Food Banks or Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara & San Mateo Counties – provide lots of fresh produce and healthy food every day. A large percentage of hungry people served by these food banks are low-income families with children and seniors. Here’s a look at hunger in the Bay Area, by the numbers*:
- 90 Million: Pounds of food distributed annually by the San Francisco & Marin Food Banks or Second Harvest Food Bank (45 million each!)
- 243,177: People served monthly in San Mateo & Santa Clara Counties by the Second Harvest Food Bank last year
- 1 in 4: People in San Francisco & Marin Counties that struggle to feed themselves daily
- 1 in 5: Children in the Bay Area that regularly do not have access to enough food to meet their nutritional needs
