Locally Grown: California Walnuts

Today is National Walnut Day and we want to celebrate the people behind the harvest of our favorite California Walnuts!

99% of U.S. walnuts come from California—grown in Northern California and the San Joaquin Valley by farming families who’ve been doing this for generations. That’s worth a handful (or two).

It’s a long road from planting a walnut orchard to delivering fresh, delicious walnuts to your local Mollie Stone’s Market.

The People:

It takes a strong community to grow, harvest, and process California walnuts for the world to enjoy. Each step in the process from planting the trees, to harvest, to packer, and finally to market is handled with care and attention. There are 4,000 walnut growers, a large majority being family farms, many of which have been in the walnut business for several generations, and approximately 72 handlers.

The Time:

Walnut production takes commitment and patience, and orchards are dedicated only to walnut production. After a walnut sapling is planted, it takes five to seven years for it to grow into an adult tree suitable for harvesting.

The Attention to Detail:

Our Mollie Stone’s California Walnuts are produced under stringent quality controls that exceed California inspection standards, reputed to be the world’s toughest. Many cutting-edge technologies are harnessed during the process in a sustained effort to bring consumers walnuts of uncompromising quality.

The Walnut (Why California Walnuts?):

Did you know that more than 99% of the walnuts in the U.S. are grown in the fertile soils of California’s Central Valley? Internationally, California walnuts supply approximately half of the world’s walnut trade. Also, as a whole food that has been certified by the American Heart Association with the Heart-Check mark, walnuts are an ideal choice in a sensible eating plan.
