Sweet Food Traditions for Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, a two-day celebration that begins in early autumn on the first day of Tishrei (the seventh month of the Jewish calendar). Rosh Hashanah begins the High Holy Days which end ten days later with Yom Kippur. It is a time for introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the previous year and planning changes to make in the new year.

New Local Products Worth a Try

Winner of a gold medal at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, this healthy granola was created by 3 friends and is produced in Sebastopol, CA.  It is wheat free, dairy free, and salt free, all natural and delicious.

Made from her grandmother’s recipe, San Rafael resident Kara Romanik has made some amazing pies.  Available as a whole pie or “pocket size”, they are free of preservatives.  Therefore, the pies are sold frozen and are delicious hot out of the oven.  Flavors of fresh strawberry, apple and pumpkin will be a treat.  I tried the pocket pie and it was tasty and not too sweet as some pies can be. Why is Using Bones in Your Soup Important?

When we were kids and my grandmother was making soup, she would take meat or chicken bones and boil them for hours with favorite vegetables.  The house smelled great on those Friday afternoons when Grandma was brewing her chicken soup for our Friday night dinners with family.  No one even thought of getting a box of manufactured broth from the store, well, couldn’t, in fact.

Whenever someone was sick in our family, chicken soup was the cure.  Tradition tells us that bone broth is nourishing.  According to Sally Fallon Morell, the author of “Nourishing Broth”, broth can give our bones strength and flexibility, our joints cushion and resilience, and our skin a more youthful appearance.  But there has been stories of better health as well. Recipe: Mia’s Traditional Spaghetti Bolognese

Mia’s Kitchen is a collection of quirky, gourmet-loving foodies who are passionate about creating high quality products that people love. The company, headed by Mia of the Sebastiani family, makes incredible pasta sauces and olive oils that will make your kitchen smell amazing.

We asked Mia to share one of her favorite family recipes: Traditional Spaghetti Bolognese. It has all the deep complexities of her Nonni’s long-simmered bolognese, and uses a jar of Mia’s Kitchen Bistro Marinara for an extra rich flavor. Pair this hearty pasta dish with a full bodied red wine such as Leese-Fitch Cabernet Sauvignon.
