One of our favorite spring flowers are Tulips, which are in full bloom just in time for Mother’s Day each year. Our selection of tulips is grown by Sun Valley Floral Farms in Northern California, just as Mother Nature intended – in soil, after going through a nice, cold “winter.” The premium bulbs used by Sun Valley’s growers (Lane, Tim & Tanner) produce sturdy tulips with vibrant-colored large buds, intense dark-green foliage and a long vase life.

Viburnum season is one of the most exciting floral events of spring. Our friends at Sun Valley are known for many year-round offerings (such as Tulips, Lilies and Irises), but the Viburnum season comes and goes quickly. The pick started at Sun Valley’s farm in Willow Creek at the end of March, and will last only into early May. The northern California farm’s mountain canyon locale provides a unique micro-climate that produces a fantastic spring show starring this award-winning flower.

Viburnum’s blooms are often mistaken for a miniature hydrangea and are commonly referred to as “snowballs.” Early in the short season, the pompom-like clusters atop tall, woody, leafy stems are bright green-yellow (almost like a tennis ball). As the season matures and the blooms bathe in the sunshine, they turn a luxurious ivory-white and resemble snowballs. Continue reading
Four Roses makes a range of special limited releases as well as their standing specialties. Like many high-end Bourbon distillers, they make a single barrel version that varies from cask to cask. But Four Roses takes it a monumental level further by actually varying the recipe used to produce the Bourbon, with startling differing results. We enjoyed our Evan Williams Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey so much last year that we decided to select another single barrel again this year. Wanting something unique and different for our customers, we reached out to the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, where Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is distilled in Rickhouse Y.
Bernheim is the first truly new variety of American straight whiskey introduced since Prohibition, and is the first whiskey to use winter wheat as the primary grain (>51%) in its mashbill. The result is a velvety soft, sweet flavor and medium finish with a brilliant copper color. It is defined as “small batch” as the Master Distillers select from 75 barrels or less to create the one-of-a-kind taste profile. As a straight whiskey, it meets the same criteria as Bourbon or rye – aged a minimum of two years in new, charred oak barrels, distilled at less than 160 proof and contains no coloring, flavoring or blending agents.
