It’s hard to believe, but it wasn’t always easy to find good falafel in San Francisco. An Armenian immigrant named Haig changed that when he opened his small shop in 1956. On a popular corner in the Richmond District, Haig began serving traditional Mediterranean foods and selling rare international spices, coffees, teas and gifts. His shop was one of the first to sell falafel sandwiches in the city, and chef and writer James Beard was a frequent visitor.
The memory of the legendary shop is kept alive today by the Takvorian family. Operating out of a production facility in Hayward, his family’s business Haig’s Delicacies produces the best Tzatziki we’ve ever tasted, smooth hummus rich with tahini, brightly flavored tabbouleh, hand-rolled dolmas and much more. Haig’s Delicacies only uses fresh, all-natural ingredients with no preservatives, and the products are completely vegan.
We were lucky enough to tour Haig’s facilities and were treated to a delicious spread of Mediterranean flavors for lunch. Rita Takvorian presented the variety of dishes and explained the benefits of a Mediterranean diet. Studies indicate that the healthy fats, lean proteins, and whole grains present in the Mediterranean diet are key in preventing heart disease and maintaining overall health.
