Jeni’s Story
Jeni Britton Bauer, founder and creative director of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, has honed her ice cream-making skills every day for more than 15 years. Jeni first discovered her love for dessert while working at La Chatelaine bakery in Columbus, Ohio. She was taken by the kitchen’s dedication to both the pastries and the success of the bakery, and soon began making desserts and ice cream in her own kitchen.
In 2002 in Columbus’ historic North Market, Jeni opened Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams to develop the definitive ice cream company, the one that would sustain her non-stop quest for new flavors and ideas. The company has grown to include ten scoop shops and nationwide distribution through retailers like Mollie Stone’s.
The Ice Cream
The hands-on crew at Jeni’s makes every small-batch ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt in their kitchen in Columbus using cream from grass-fed Southeast Ohio cows, Ohio honey, and whole fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as carefully sourced ingredients from around the world. Rare, fair-trade ingredients used in year-round flavors include Ndalia Estate vanilla (Uganda) and Askinosie’s bean-to-bar chocolate (Missouri).
The intensely flavorful ice creams include signature flavors (like Salty Caramel – get her recipe here) as well as limited-edition, quarterly flavor collections inspired by the seasons, pop culture, culinary history and world trends.
The Cookbook
In June 2011, Artisan Books published Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. In its sixth printing, The New York Times best-selling cookbook was dubbed “the homemade ice cream making Bible” by The Wall Street Journal, while The Washington Post proclaimed Jeni “an ice cream wizard.” Most recently, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home earned Jeni her first James Beard Media Award, America’s most coveted honor for journalists, broadcast media, and authors writing about food and the culinary arts.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home will be available for purchase during the events at Mollie Stone’s. We can’t wait to see you there!
